Aviemore Public Meeting Report

Yes Badenoch and Strathspey had a fantastically successful public meeting in January this year where the demand for seats was greater than the supply.

All available seats were taken for the public meeting on the Referendum organised by YES! Badenoch & Strathspey, on Monday 27th January, in Aviemore Community Centre. Over two hundred people were present with organisers delighted to give up seats to accommodate members of the public.

Chairman Toni Vastano introduced:

  • Highland MSP Jean Urquhart (Independent)
  • Scottish Greens prospective parliamentary candidate Eleanor Scott
  • Liz Walker from Women for Independence
  • Highland Councillor Richard Laird (SNP).

With three female speakers, this was billed as an event in which the emphasis would be on women. The message seems to have been taken quite literally as some found it difficult to drag their male partners along to what they thought would be a "women's meeting"!

As it turned out, there was something for everybody: coffee and cake, balloons for the bairns, a video montage by Hammy Morrison and the debut of a new number by singer songwriter Gilly, supported by The Cask.

The song, Let Alba Shine, was featured on the Wings Over Scotland website. Hammy's video, with Gilly's song as backing track can be seen below:

This was a really fun night out with guests leaving very pleased with what they'd heard and looking forward to a YES! vote.
